Lord of Huanca (Señor de Huanca) — 12×16” Original Hand-Painted Oil Painting (Cusco School Style)
Invite Christ’s healing mercy, compassion, and profound tenderness into your home with this 12×16-inch original hand-painted oil depiction of the Lord of Huanca, crafted in the luminous Andean-Baroque tradition of the historic Cusco School.
This expressive devotional artwork portrays Christ after the scourging—humble, suffering, and radiant with divine love. His wounded body, gentle posture, and the fine gold ornamental detailing reflect the centuries-old spiritual heritage of Peru. Rooted in deep Catholic devotion, this sacred image is especially beloved for its connection to miraculous healing and Christ’s closeness to the suffering.
The Story Behind the Tradition
The devotion to El Señor de Huanca comes from a powerful event in 1675 in the region of Cusco, Peru.
The story begins when the Marquis of Valleumbroso discovered a rich vein of gold and forced local descendants of the Incas into brutal labor. Many workers were mistreated; many died. Among them was a humble indigenous laborer named Diego Quispe.
One day, Diego defended another worker who was being whipped. For his courage, he was beaten, imprisoned, and condemned to the same punishment. That night, Diego escaped, and as dawn approached, he hid in a small grotto within a rocky formation. Hearing the Spaniards’ footsteps searching for him, he prayed the Our Father and Hail Mary continuously throughout the day in fear and desperation.
When night fell and Diego prepared to flee, a sudden, brilliant light filled the grotto. Before him appeared Jesus Christ Himself, bleeding from the scourging He endured. Christ told Diego that he was to become a dove of peace and compassion for his people, and instructed him to return to his town and receive Holy Communion.
Overwhelmed, Diego fell asleep—and the next morning Christ appeared again. Grateful and trembling, Diego offered Him a small cross.
Later, Diego returned with a group of pilgrims and a priest. As they entered the grotto, they too witnessed the miraculous apparition of the bleeding Christ. The Church later sent a painter to document the miracle; guided by what seemed to be an invisible hand, he painted Christ’s image directly onto the rock.
From that moment forward, El Señor de Huanca became a place of pilgrimage. To this day, thousands journey to the sanctuary year after year, seeking healing, protection, and spiritual renewal.
