St. Clare of Assisi and the Eucharist — 32x47" Original Oil Painting (Cusco School of Art)
This hand-painted Cusco School masterpiece depicts the miraculous event of St. Clare of Assisi defending her convent with the Holy Eucharist. In 1240, Saracen soldiers surrounded the convent of San Damiano in Assisi, where St. Clare and her sisters lived in prayer and poverty.
According to the writings of Blessed Tommaso da Celano, a Franciscan friar who chronicled St. Clare’s life, the nuns were filled with fear as the soldiers drew near. With unshakable faith, St. Clare—though weak and ill—prostrated herself before the Blessed Sacrament and prayed:
“Behold, my Lord, is it possible You want to deliver into the hands of pagans Your defenseless handmaids, whom I have taught out of love for You? I pray You, Lord, protect these Your handmaids, whom I cannot now save by myself.”
From the tabernacle she heard the consoling words: “I will always protect you.” Strengthened by this divine assurance, St. Clare raised the monstrance containing the Holy Eucharist before the advancing soldiers. Struck with holy fear, they fled, leaving the convent and the city unharmed.
This 32x47-inch oil on canvas, painted by a master artist from Cusco, Peru, captures that moment of radiant courage and Eucharistic faith. The luminous gold tones, intricate details, and reverent composition invite prayerful reflection on the power of the Blessed Sacrament and the unwavering trust of a saint who placed everything in God’s hands.
